🧠 Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE)

The MMSE is a widely used cognitive screening tool for assessing orientation, memory,
attention, language, and visuospatial skills. The maximum score is 30 points.


1. Temporal Orientation (5 points)

Assess awareness of time





2. Spatial Orientation (5 points)

Assess awareness of place





3. Immediate Memory (3 points)

Repeat 3 words immediately after examiner



4. Attention & Calculation (5 points)

Subtract serial 7s or spell “WORLD” backwards





5. Recall (3 points)

Recall the 3 words presented earlier



6. Language (8 points)

Assess naming, repetition, comprehension, reading, and writing





7. Visuospatial Ability (1 point)

Copy a drawing (e.g., two intersecting pentagons)

Interpretation (suggested):
• 24 – 30 points → Normal cognition
• 19 – 23 points → Mild cognitive impairment
• 10 – 18 points → Moderate cognitive impairment
• ≤ 9 points → Severe cognitive impairment
